THE DALESFOLK - 4 -

Then there are memories galore of Hannah Hauxwell, who achieved celebrity status on television but never lost her quiet, courteous manner. A spinster, she lived alone at a dalehead farm. She copied - nobbut just, as they say in the Dales - and I never knew her complain. Like all dalesfolk, she was a great wearer-up of old clothes.

One remembrance of her is of a solitary figure in a hayfield, swaddled in an old overcoat and wearing one of her late lamented auntie's straw hats. In winter, when gales rattled the windows and night seemed determined to go on for ever, Hannah thought of blue summer skies. She now lives in a small house at a village lower down the dale. Sometimes she is asked if she misses the old way of life. She doesn't, and who can blame her?
